"I remain pro-choice. I am not religious. I am an atheist and a rationalist. The findings did surprise me, but the results appear to be very robust because they persist across a series of disorders and a series of ages. . . . Abortion is a traumatic life event; that is, it involves loss, it involves grief, it involves difficulties. And the trauma may, in fact, predispose people to having mental illness."
David M. Fergusson, PhD, director of the 25 year longitudinal study on abortion in young women and subsequent mental health, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2006.
Women's Health After Abortion
How does abortion affect women, men and teens? Research has indicated that both the physical and emotional impact of abortion is multi-faceted and complex. Consider that since 1969 there have been over 3 million abortions in Canada. Abortion not only effects the mother and her preborn child, it also effects the community of people closest to these two individuals; the father, the grandparents, extended family and friends. Approximately 40-50 people can be affected by a single abortion.
The following section focuses on the repercussions, both physically and psychologically, that abortion is having on those most closely associated to this life changing event.
