The Signal Hill The Signal Hill

"Sweeter even than to have had the joy of caring for children of my own has it been to me to help bring about a better state of things for mothers generally, so that their unborn little ones could not be willed away from them."
~ Susan B. Anthony, quoted in The American Feminist, Spring 1998 ~

Adoption

Placing a child for adoption is one of the most selfless and empowering things a woman who is unprepared for childrearing can do. It gives her the ability to recognize and admit that she may not be able to adequately provide for her child, while at the same time allowing her to act for the child’s greater good and benefit.

The benefits of adoption are many and wonderful. A woman who places her child for adoption can provide an infertile couple with the love and joy that they are unable to provide for themselves. Couples often wait half a dozen years or more to adopt a child born in Canada. Babies placed for adoption can mean the world to an anxious couple and put an end to years of painful anticipation and uncertainty.

Adoption also balances the desire for a woman to carry through with her pregnancy while realizing that providing for her child once it is born is not an option.

There are many inspiring stories of the hope and love that have been brought into reality through the adoption of a newborn child.

Learn about adoption

There are private and public adoption agencies.

Private adoption agencies are provincially licensed and provide services both before and after the adoption process to the adoptive parents and the birth parents. They are able to facilitate domestic adoptions (within Canada) and adoptions abroad (outside of Canada). Private adoption agencies may cost more than public adoption agencies and are available only in a few provinces.

Public adoption agencies are funded by the federal government and exist in every Province in Canada. The Children’s Aid Society is one such organization that not only provides adoption services but also looks after troubled youth or works with foster children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse.

Adoption agencies will help both the birth mother and the adopting parents with everything that they need to know, including:

  • Writing the letter to the birth mother
  • Parent profiling and networking
  • Private, public and international adoption
  • Special needs adoption
  • Financial inquiries
  • Adoption myths
  • Adoption do’s and don’ts
  • Discussion forums

Abortion

Many women do choose abortion. Many, however, do not fully understand what this choice entails, including: the methods of abortion most commonly used; the effects of abortion on a woman’s health, both physically and psychologically; and the level of development of her preborn child. Before making a decision, know the facts. We believe that when a woman is fully informed of all her options she will not choose to do harm to herself or to her preborn baby.
